Part I - Basic Law for Arbitrators

September 27-29, 2016

An introduction to basic principles of law focusing on commercial disputes. Intensive review of principles of general contract law, plus selected types of contracts. The course is intended for non-lawyers.



Part II -- “Conduct of Arbitration Proceedings”

3 days x 7 hours, plus post-test (4 hours credit if successful)

Content: Intensive review of the BC Arbitration Act and rules of procedure including options under various sets of rules (BCICAC, ADRIC, plus others); evaluating types of evidence; practice issues; ethical concerns; natural justice in distance, documents only and in-person hearings.

Acknowledgement: Certificate of Completion – 25 hours

Course Cost: $800 (includes Cost of Text)

Dates: October 25-27, 2016


Part III - “Arbitration Workshop”

2 days x 7 hours, plus post test (8 hours credit if successful)

Content: Review arbitrator’s role and rules of procedure; practice decision writing; role-play in-person arbitration. Each participant will conduct a minimum of 2 arbitrations and be an observer or given a role to act as plaintive or defendant in others.)

ICBC Coverage Disputes

½ day; no test

Content: Advanced instruction in statutory arbitration scheme for vehicle damage disputes. Specialized documents-only arbitration training in determination of Actual Cash Value of total loss vehicles.
